Have I touched on how Noah’s podcast sounds super lame? This whole season has talked about his podcast, The Morgue, and how tons of people are addicted to it but anytime we catch a glimpse of it, it’s really not very good. It’s a lot of over dramatic nonsense, like a teenager writing his first song for his goth rock band. I could see it maybe having some ironic fans, but people being legitimately into this? That may be the most far-fetched part of the show so far and hopefully Noah isn’t allowed any more narration scenes after this episode.
I was coming around on Emma a little bit after the last episode as she clearly isn’t going to be taking any more of the killer’s shit this time around. However, she lost me immediately by very quickly reminding me just how little I care about anything to do with her and Kieran (it’s like rooting for two inanimate objects to get together, like why the fuck should I care if watering can starts dating brick of cheese, there’s nothing there), and in her first scene with Noah. She goes to Noah and demands to see his board of potential suspects. He says he’s not ready to show her. She immediately rips the cover off of it anyway, sees Audrey’s picture (placed there after the last episode’s cliffhanger) and demands that Noah takes it down before storming off. Don’t you go telling people who they can and can’t have on their murder boards Emma! You make your own damn murder board and then we’ll talk.
While Emma has once again lost points, Brooke is definitely gaining them. She has become a far more interesting character in the wake of Jake’s death. She is convinced that Seth Branson (the skeazy teacher she was sleeping with in the first season) is responsible for Jake’s death so to get some answers, she seduces him, brings him to a motel room, handcuffs him to the bed, and then proceeds to cut his face with a pair of scissors and threaten to cut his dick off. It may be a bit much to go straight from casual suspicion to dick severing, but it’s nice to see her really jumping into the action as her character has been such a non-entity up until now. She is going in some promising directions and I actually find myself interested to see her continue down her new dark path.
I will give the show credit for not waiting long to have Noah and Audrey deal with the fact that he knows she is involved in all these murders in some way. The problem is that the reveal of what her involvement exactly was, is not at all a satisfying pay-off. I guess I already decided I would be fine with spoilers in these things so here we go – she invited Piper to the town in the first season. That’s it. She feels partly responsible for the murders Piper ended up committing because Audrey wanted her to come and help out with this documentary she was making. It’s such a non-reveal that has been building for so long that I really hope she’s lying. If that truly is the extent of her overall involvement, that would be crushingly disappointing as it’s the subplot I was the most interested in.
There’s also a particularly silly dialogue exchange I want to highlight. Before Noah and Audrey have their heart to heart conversation about her “involvement” with the murders, there’s a scene where the two of them are tied up inside roller coaster cars at a closed (abandoned?) amusement park. Before we find out that Audrey orchestrated the whole thing (which is immediately obvious when it’s revealed she’s there too…and also because this show is frustratingly hesitant in having any semblance of a body count so I couldn’t accept they were in any immediate danger), Noah is understandably freaking out. He makes way too references to horror movies and then they drop this back and forth:
Noah: “Multiple kidnappings is a common storyline in the torture porn sub genre. Usually only one captive survives and sometimes…”
Audrey: “Sometimes what?!”
Noah: “…Sometimes no one survives.”
This is one of many references made to torture porn movies in this scene, but it stood-out because the amazing insight into horror movies is sometimes people die, and sometimes they don’t. I’m disappointed in Audrey that she seemed surprised by this revelation. And yes, Noah’s insistence on being the Randy of the Scream TV Series continues to be the character’s worst quality.
Oh and the killer cuts Seth Branson’s hand off at the end. Not a death technically, so we’re still at a body count of 2 at the halfway point of the season.
Jeepers Creepers isn’t a bad episode, but it’s hard not to get hung-up on the disappointing reveal from Audrey. I will continue to believe there is more to come there, and in the meantime at least we have some interesting stuff coming from Brooke to hopefully pick up some of my lost interest from the Audrey stuff.
Killer Prediction – There is actually nobody inside of the killer’s costume. It has gone sentient and we will find this out when Emma pulls off the mask in the season finale to find nothing underneath. It will be the ballsiest killer reveal in slasher history.
